Changes happening at Race2Play
Jul 20, 2016

Hi guys!

So, thanks in large to member discussions and requests on our forums we have considered and started implementing some changes to our current systems here at Race2Play. Some of these changes have already taken effect, while others will be taking effect in the coming days. Here is a run-down...

New schedule timing - We have implemented a 2-hour window even scheduling system (as opposed to 1-hour). This will help spread events out a bit, preventing some (not all though) overlapping events. This will allow people to join many more events on the schedule, and increase grid sizes overall.

More sim choices - We have increased the number of series with the Assetto Corsa sim (now up to 6 currently scheduled with more to come), RaceRoom (3 series, but more weekday series to come), rFactor 2 (13 series on the schedule, and more to come), and Stock Car Extreme (12 series scheduled... yes, more to come). There is even a few Automibilista series, but lets leave those out of the equation for now as it is still far from a stable platform. That is a total of 34 series using the four most recent games to be released into the market, more than half of all events are non-rFactor1. rFactor still has 29 series, and I suspect it will continue to be the leader as it does still draw in the largest crowds.

Time Trial events - We have started utilizing the Time Trial events a little differently. Instead of having them all scheduled out months ahead, they will be scheduled on the fly, so we can use the latest car and track addons in shorter (1 week long) series for a bit more excitement.

Guest member trial periods - Before, guests had free reign to run as many events as they wanted without ever supporting the community. As of August 1st, this is changing as Race2Play is implementing a guest member "trial" period. Once the trial period expires a members account will lock out any further event entries (Guests may still participate in forums and discussions). Guest members must decide at that time if they wish to continue racing in the community they obviously find value in. Becoming a supporting member will immediately unlock event entry abilities again, but falling back to Guest status at any time after will cause them re-lock. This will weed out the less-dedicated folks (the ones more likely to cause issues and to no-show to events) and strengthen our grid numbers and community as a whole. Currently this period expires at 100 events, but expect that number to reduce over the coming months. If you are a Guest member with more than 100 events at this time, your trial period will expire on August 1st.

Increase Maximum entries in events - R2P-Official events (those events that can be sponsored) and ProPlus CYO events will see an increase in grid limits. While the highest limit was 28 cars in the past, we will increase that by another 20% or more to allow more folks (Guests too) to get in and race. Some games only support as few as 24 drivers on a server, but we will allow slightly more than 24 to account for a few no-shows. Again, increased grid sizes across the schedule.

Road races with cautions - We will begin trying some of our road races with cautions enabled... with some sims. As of right now, that realistically only includes rFactor2 at this time as it is the only one we can edit the rFM (the file that controls when/if a caution is waved) for each event without causing mismatches. I can assure you it will not work perfectly right away and will take some tweaking. So, to avoid ruining any championships, we will do a few as fun-runs first. Expect announcements on each as they pop up onto the schedule. Read more

Servers setup earlier - In recent years we have setup all our race servers 24-48 hours prior to the events. With some of the recent changes we can now start getting those servers up and running a bit sooner, so we will (as long as they do not disrupt ongoing events for that day). So, you can start looking for your favorite servers sooner. Find [Semipro] Series

And for those that do not know, the Superview page (on Racing tab) shows all servers up and running.

Semipro Awards - The Semipro Awards program will make a return offering random Guest members a free Semipro membership in select events.

Cash Awards events - Drivers and teams in the [Pro] series race for cash awards. The drivers and team owners in each run class racing for shares of a cash purse.

Lastly, we are looking for a few individuals who love to produce videos. We would be willing to give out memberships to those willing to do a video or two each month. If interested, please contact this account directly with any examples of videos you have done in the past.

Everett: I prefer to race with a grid of 10 clean drivers (or less) to race with a grid of 20 full of arcade gamers!
By having to pay those arcade players become somehow Sim Racing drivers - start to think twice brfore doing rubbish.

I like some of the changes, too. But I do think Guest drivers should be able to fill vacant spots in races.
For example the last 2 weeks the races in the "EnduRacers World Challenge [South America] series" have been cancelled.
I don't have time to be racing everyday, so I just prepare for 1 or 2 races for the week. Then when I'm ready (after working on my car setup in my free time during the week) and the day comes, the race gets cancelled. It's not a good feeling.
I hope R2P can find a solution to this.
Thanks,
Gino

The [Semipro] events are now on the schedule. Yes, we give free memberships away.

And we turned the remainder of the European Le Mans series to a 'Safety Car Enabled' series.

Now that we have some data on the subject of the changes listed above, I'd like to share that with you.

The new schedule timing have allowed us to expand how many practice servers we have operational before race-day. We are now comfortably hosting those servers three and sometimes 4 days prior to the race events, instead of 24-36 hours before. Everyone loves getting on a server to practice with friends and team mates, so now you have more options

Some of the new sims are attracting some additional race entries.
1) While AC is still single-digit grid numbers, it has given us some of the best entry numbers we have seen from the sim. The future is getting brighter with this sim.
2) RRE has doubled in entries and the same in participation numbers since June.
3) GSC (our 3rd most raced sim currently) seems to be on a roll now, getting further and further in double-digits for attendance and high-teens for entries. That is almost double the entries and grid numbers in just the past 5 weeks, for GSC.
4) rF2 (our second most raced sim) can be all over the place at times, with some events only attracting 5 racers and others attracting 30+ signups. On the plus side, DNS numbers have dropped by 18% in rF2 events. So, at least the drivers are showing up more.
5) rF1 (still king in # of events) has been taking some nice steps forward lately too, with the largest event raced at R2P in some months happening the final weekend of July.

Overall, as Race2Play has implemented the new Guest member trial period, Race2Play's TOTAL membership has increased by 16% (Thank you guys for stepping up). As we figured ahead of time, some of those Guests would not step up and we would lose a few drivers in the process. That loss came out to be two less signups per event, and one single less driver on the grid to date. Yes, only 1 less driver on the grid it the total damage of losing those non-supporters. And with more drivers entering Race2Play every day, we will have no problems filling in spaces. In effect, all the doom-n-gloom forecasted by those few, did not come true.

Some great news is that the number of no-shows (not showing up on race-day) reduced by 9% over the month of June with only 234 drivers having no-showed to any events in July (253 in June) and the average no-shows per driver dropped from 2.08 to 1.95 (that means less people no-showing, and less often).

We still have a few of the above ideas to implement in the coming weeks.
- rF2 Road races with safety cars are looking good and will be adopted in some of the larger events at Race2Play
- Semipro awards will be coming back right away, with a slight change. We will give out a 1-month membership for EVERY event that exceeds a certain number of drivers. So, bigger events = more prizes
- Pro awards (cash prizes, for supporting members only) will be coming back too. More info on that later.

The free unlimited "Guest Membership" was bound to fail eventually as there is just about no activity that is totally free in this world. Everyone agrees it takes money to run R2P but people also want their money's worth.
I was a Supporting Member for a year and found I got a great bargain racing at R2P but as my time to race diminished I realized the Supporting Membership didn't make sense to me when I could race occasionally for free.
I've done "other" types of racing and all of that requires an entry fee for the race you want to race in. I don't see why that couldn't apply to all the races at R2P. The series Sponsorships style of collecting money is the way to go. I usually enter a race when I get the chance and would gladly pay to enter that race. In a years time I would probably pay more for my racing than buying a yearly subscription but if I only raced a few times a year I would feel like I'm losing money by not utilizing that membership.
I'm sure this is what most people would feel like but charging by the race would better guarantee a "show up" rather than a "no show", give the racers more freedom on spending their money as they choose and probably make more money for R2P!

I don't like racing as a guest because of the inherent problems with not being able to race etc. but I don't want to subscribe not knowing if I'll race anymore during the year or not.

Guest entries should be limited to 10 races or less so they can see how well this place is run then they can pay like they would for any other activity in life!!

Some events will be made "Semipro" events. All membership levels may enter. Guest members who race in that event will have same chance of random pick for a free membership (1-month).

R2P has always been willing to work within your budget to help you become a supporting member. All you have to do is send Todd or myself a message and start that discussion.

Change fine but... Would make more sense to let newcomer get involve easier, by easier I mean cheaper mostly but not only.
First few months, I feel very little point to update from guest to semi-pro; On top of that there is not enough difference between pro plus and pro or semi-pro. So it make your offers Pro plus or nothing In my book (or donation,if I felt it was needed.)

Something, more like below, would make more sense:

-Keeping pro plus around 15 a months.
-Pro at 70 a years or 5 a months.
-Semi-pro at 20 a years or 3 a months
(everybody should go for the year; that's the point. And let semi pro have more than one screenshoot;
-Guest should have 2 screenshoots: good for them good for the other; and get them for chance to get involve in the community.

That's my 2 cents.

Tiago, If you purchase the series sponsorship (usually $3-$10) you are able to enter all events in that series (6-12 races). If you purchase the single event ($1-$3) you may enter that single event. Sometimes you even get to choose what track the race will be held.

Everett, it is nice to hear that you understand that R2P can not continue without the support of our members. I hope you can become one of those supporters soon. I did offer your team boss (?) a special package deal to include you, but I have not heard back from him.
